Etching

Etching is an intaglio printmaking process in which a metal plate, usually copper or zinc, is coated with a protective ground and then drawn into to expose the surface beneath. The artist removes the ground where lines are intended to print, revealing the metal. The plate is then placed in an acid bath, which bites into the exposed areas, creating recessed lines that will hold ink. The length of time the plate remains in the acid influences the depth and darkness of the printed line.

Once etched, the plate is inked and the surface carefully wiped so that ink remains only in the incised grooves. Dampened paper is laid over the plate and passed through a press under significant pressure, transferring the ink from the recessed lines to the sheet. The process produces characteristically fluid marks and a distinctive plate mark around the image.

Different types of ground affect the quality of line. Hardground etching uses a firm coating that is scratched through to create clean, precise lines, while softground employs a softer layer that can register more textured, crayon-like marks. Photo-etching extends the process by using light-sensitive coatings to transfer photographic imagery onto the plate before it is bitten in acid.

Etching is valued for its expressive range, capable of producing both delicate linear work and atmospheric depth. The resulting prints often retain a sense of immediacy in the drawn line, balanced by the physical evidence of the plate and press.

    1. The image is drawn into a coated metal plate.

    2. Acid bites into exposed lines.

    3. Ink is worked into the incised areas.

    4. Paper is pressed against the plate under high pressure.

  • Fine, precise lines with subtle tonal depth.

Slight plate mark visible around the image.

    Expressive linear qualities.

  • Plates gradually wear with repeated printing.

Later impressions may show slight softening.

Edition size often reflects plate durability.

  • Shaped by edition size and condition.

Smaller or early editions may be less common.

Plates are usually cancelled after printing.
