William Lowry
William Lowry is a London-based artist whose drawing-led practice spans printmaking, sculpture and installation. He completed his MFA at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, in 2026, following a BFA at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.
His work explores masculinity, memory and myth through the symbolic language of architecture. Boys and men recur as icon-like figures, often pale, haloed or rendered in cool grisaille, caught between performance and vulnerability. They occupy spaces that feel suspended between the contemporary and the ancient: city edges, watchtowers, arches, floodlights, shrines and threshold-like interiors.
Lowry is increasingly concerned with the image as object: etched copper plates, illuminated enclosures, shrines and arched display structures borrow from altarpieces, reliquaries and wayside chapels to ask what it means to protect, enshrine or ritualise an image.
His work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally, including at The Courtauld Institute of Art, Mall Galleries and the Royal Over-Seas League. Recent awards include the Bartolomeu dos Santos Memorial Award, Max Werner Drawing Prize and Hermione Hammond Drawing Award.
