Victoria O’Shea’s work explores the illusion of permanence in the landscape, where rocks flow like liquid, continually forming and disintegrating.
The gentle drip of water gradually and unstoppably creates fantastical caves which blur the boundary between solid and liquid, while continental plates slowly compress and stretch the ground. All of these forces are gloriously out of our control.
O’Shea’s recent series of prints uses mokulito, as she is fascinated by the unpredictability of this technique, where successive exposure of the wooden plate to ink and water gradually degrades it, until the wood grain takes over and the image disintegrates. She aims to capture this unstable point in the printing process, as she is interested in the subtle interplay between the painted image- of rocks, wood, water- and the particular grain of the hardwood, where the summer and winter growth patterns become an integral part of the finished print.
Victoria O’Shea graduated from Goldsmiths College in 2000 with a BA in Fine Art. She has exhibited video, animated drawing and printmaking in group shows in the UK.
