Vanessa Wallace is a Western Australian artist working primarily in print and artist’s books. Since 2000, she has developed an archival project documenting the ground underfoot, using photography, drawing and rubbings to minimise disruption to each site. She builds bodies of work from structured walks—sometimes gathering one image per day over time, other times collecting multiple images in a single outing. These works explore everyday moments and the blurred boundary between public and private space, often incorporating text as a key element. Wallace deliberately employs repetitive, labour-intensive printmaking techniques to counter the instantaneous act of recording images, layering and selectively removing information to reflect how memory shifts with each act of recollection.
Wallace holds a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) from Edith Cowan University (2003). She has exhibited widely since 2001, including recent solo shows Look left, then right … then left again (Rockingham Arts Centre, 2024) and back in the moment (2024), developed during her 2023 Perth Letterpress Workshop residency. Wallace has been a finalist in several major print awards and was selected as a Print Council of Australia Print Commission Artist in 2012. Her work is held in public and private collections, including the State Library of Victoria.
