Following a career building technology for the art world, Peter Chater (born 1963, UK) began printmaking in 2025, developing his own technique for engraving etching plates with a laser. He generally draws using his own photographs as reference, building dense, tonal images out of simple black lines.
He does not think of his work as portraiture. His subjects, often young men in their twenties caught in quiet, contemplative moments, are a way of returning to his own emotional memory: to the moments in his own twenties when he stood at a crossroad, weighing one possible path against another.
For Peter, making art again after so long is a return along one of those paths.
