Martha Schlegel (1988) is a self-taught visual artist and printmaker whose practice spans photogravure, relief print, and alternative processes—such as solargraphy and chlorophyll printing—that directly incorporate nature into the art-making process.
Born in Germany, she now lives by the Scottish seaside near Edinburgh. Schlegel’s creative practice is driven by her insatiable curiosity, exploring nature’s untamed force and the enticing potential of the abandoned. Schlegel’s intimate connection to the ocean is a recurring motif in her work.
Her art has been exhibited internationally, with shows in the UK, Germany, the US, Canada, and Japan, including WCPF 2023. In 2024, she expanded her practice during the Mi-Lab Mokuhanga residency in Japan, and in 2025, she was awarded a Visual Artists and Craft Maker Award. She is also an active member of the Society of Scottish Artists and Edinburgh Printmakers.
