Lucy Newman's work pivots around her interests - landscape, the domestic environment, the past and the natural world - always seen via a fascination with pictures.
In her studio, she has a Gelli printing plate and a green screen backdrop, enjoying the contrast between the illusions of traditional print materials and digital video.
Her work is influenced by early film and optical analogue effects. She is intrigued by the Claude glass used by travellers to observe scenery during the Grand Tour, the poses of staged figures, and by the part pictures play in how we create landscape in turn.
Her work absorbs her lived experience, creating images connected to a river testing citizen science project, or to the everyday junk mail that has come through the door. She makes prints as records of material objects at 100% scale. Considering their origin, they are artefacts of our time, with their raw materials and complex stories.
