Julia Colmenares
Julia Colmenares’ work is rooted in nature, exploring the interplay between cultivated and wild landscapes through personal and environmental themes.
Her monotypes combine the gestural qualities of drawing and painting. Using monochrome or graduated ink rolls on steel plates, she works from memory, sketches and photographs, reductively removing ink by hand and rag. Each print is completed in a single, focused session, lending an immediacy and physical energy to the marks that evoke the movement of grasses, reeds and trees.
Recent works, including Tapestry and Sway, investigate colour and the rhythmic patterns of the natural world, creating a quieter, more reflective atmosphere. Edge II draws on an overgrown embankment beside the River Roding near her home, capturing the threshold between reality and imagination experienced during lockdown.
Originally from California, Colmenares earned a BA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, studied painting in France, and completed an MA in Fine Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art, London.
Her prints have been widely exhibited since 2012, highlights include the National Print Competition, Wells Contemporary, the Bainbridge Open, the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair (2018–2025), and selections for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2024 and 2025.
