John’s atmospheric aquatint etchings seek to explore the tension between realism and impressionism, reflecting the balance of control and unpredictability inherent in the etching process. Inspired by the built and natural environment, his earlier work drew from the landscapes of Northeast England. Following a move north in 2022, his focus has shifted to capturing the distinct, evocative atmosphere of Edinburgh and the wider Scottish landscapes.
John began his printmaking practice in 2014, following a career teaching in schools and universities. While his earliest work made use of photo-etching, he has since transitioned to traditional intaglio techniques using brass and copper plates. He builds texture and depth through multiple layers of aquatint, sugar lift, and a diverse range of resists. In recent years, John has worked almost exclusively with spit-bite, painting acid directly onto the plates rather than using an acid tank. Combining this technique with various resists allows for a freer, more painterly approach, resulting in the subtle, atmospheric effects that characterise his work.
Currently working from his home studio in Newtongrange and at Edinburgh Printmakers, John regularly exhibits his work including with Edinburgh Printmakers, Printmakers of Scotland, Visual Arts Scotland, and the Society of Scottish Artists.
