Ian Brooks works with traditional sugar-lift and spit-bite aquatint to make atmospheric landscape etchings. Drawn to remote locations, in particular the polar regions, he aims to evoke the unique sense of place specific to a given location and time - responding to the weather as much as geography. Based on close observation and drawing, the specificity of each piece is important - capturing an impression of what was observed and experienced at the time.
Ian was awarded the New Light Printmaker’s Prize in 2020, a New Light bursary prize in 2025, the Original Print Prize at the ING Discerning Eye exhibition 2020, and the People’s Printmaker prize by vote of visitors to the Flourish Award for Excellence in Printmaking exhibition, 2022.
