Artist and researcher Henrietta Simson explores possibilities available to the landscape image in a digital context framed by ecological crisis.
Her interest lies in technology’s often invisible hand in shaping ways of thinking about landscape and its images, and how these are defined and encountered. Visual technologies have profoundly impacted our ways of seeing, representing, and understanding our environment. Simson’s work presents an idea of landscape that facilitates a critical questioning of its spatial and aesthetic structures.
These screenprints explore the collision between the physical world (the sky and the seabed) and the immaterial worlds of language and image-making. Oil, gold and data, entwined behind our value systems, drive us into this strange new world.
Studying at the Slade, she completed an MA in painting in 2007, and a practice-related PhD in 2017. She has received awards from The Arts Council, The Slade, UCL Graduate School, The Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers, and for recent research, UAL (University of the Arts London) and the University of Exeter (EU Horizon).
In 2011 she won the Threadneedle Prize for Painting and Sculpture.
Her work has been selected for the John Moores Painting Prize, New Contemporaries, Jerwood Drawing Prize and Volta New York.
