Helen King is a kitchen table amateur artist, squeezing in her practise between family life and her day job as a clothing designer. It is through this work that led to her collecting vintage graphic t-shirts and it is this that feeds into her designs. Inspired by 1990’s tourist tees, her artworks often feature bright fluo colours, and motifs of a lost paradise - palm trees, sunsets and good vibes.
King makes her prints using the objects she has to hand around the house; old corrugated cardboard to make stencils,or raiding her son’s art supplies. She prints using a gel plate, for a quick immediate result, where every print is a one off and the mistakes often direct the process leading to new ideas.
King’s recent series of prints, named Raining in paradise was made using ink pens loosely drawn on to a gel plate and left to dry. Once acrylic paint was added and the print was lifted, the end result is one of different blurring textures, and colour mixes.
