Hanna Matthews is a printmaker and illustrator based in Cornwall. She works playfully with light and texture in monoprint to create subtle and unconscious emotional spaces.
She uses print to explore the importance of handcraft and tactile media in her work. A sense of place can become a story; a landscape is animated by its rhythms, histories, and folk narratives. This series of prints encompasses her love for monotype printmaking and its ability to capture the unpredictability of the natural world.
She occupies a space in between illustration and fine art, experimenting with print media and while prioritising medium and process in her work. She is particularly interested in the power of drawing and observation in forming connections; how we can apply these ideas to our relationships with the natural world and the non-human, and the role of art in communicating collective narratives and personal experiences.
Since graduating from Falmouth University in 2022 with a BA in Illustration, she has published zines for sale in the Tate Britain and St Ives shops, and shows work in galleries in Cornwall and the South West such as the St Ives Society of Artists and Sailors Jail gallery in Falmouth.
