Erika Servin’s work is based on societal issues and, she is inspired by popular Mexican culture.
Her work is concerned with translating the concept of Mexican popular culture from historical symbols into contemporary narratives. This practice-based research is concerned with exploring the relationship between images used in Mexican popular culture and the political and social aspects contained within them. As well as producing her artwork, Servin is interested in exploring the potential of printmaking to engage with communities, and the relationship between visual art and the development of a social, political and/or personal voice.
The series of lithographs are part of a project Muxe now! A study of the visual identity of the Zapotec Muxe community. The Muxe tradition is local and indigenous.
Servin, graduated from New York University with a Master of Arts degree. Since 1997 she has been exhibited in the UK, Mexico, Australia, United States, Finland, France, Spain, Japan among others, with solo and collective exhibitions.
Among the recognitions she has had from the Association of the Contemporary Museum of art, Chamalieres, France, for her contribution of art in contemporary times, as well as received funding for art projects from Catherine Cookson Foundation and Grodman Legacy.
