Ella West (b.1991) is a multidisciplinary artist based in London. Her practice explores the concept of deep time, using geological timescales as a framework through which to consider landscape, labour and the systems that sustain life. She makes limited-edition prints and paintings, alongside installations that combine elements of ceramics, sculpture and video.
In her works on paper, she creates screen prints using hand-cut paper stencils, painting ink directly through the screen. This process allows images to build up slowly in layers, giving each print subtle variations and leaving visible traces of its making.
Drawing from geological samples and illustrations, archaeological artefacts, museum collections and educational diagrams, her work moves between representation and abstraction to consider how we understand, interpret and care for the world around us. She is interested in the often-overlooked labour involved in maintaining people, places and materials, and in the ways shared knowledge is accumulated, preserved and passed through time.
Ella graduated from the Slade School of Art with an MA in Fine Art Media and Contemporary Art Theory (2022) and was shortlisted for the Adrian Carruthers Award (2022). She was awarded the Intaglio Printmaker Award at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair (2022).
