Charles Spitzack is an American artist based in the Pacific Northwest working primarily in woodcut printmaking. He has found the physical nature of carving and printing by hand to be intuitive and freeing, something he shares through teaching and by making the medium accessible to others.
Beyond maintaining a dedicated studio practice and teaching art, Spitzack serves as Board President of Seattle Print Arts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to printmaking, and works as a carpenter in the building trades. Carpentry, community organizing, teaching, and private studio practice are deeply interconnected, each informing the others.
Spitzack first discovered printmaking at Highpoint Center in Minneapolis and continued his studies at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Represented by Armstrong Fine Art and published by Pomegranate Communications, he teaches printmaking in person and online through community art centers and arts organizations in the United States and internationally. In 2024, he attended the Mokuhanga Conference in Echizen, Japan, where he received the Kobaien Prize, and returned in 2026 to participate in the advanced Mi-LAB residency. He is a 2026 Ballinglen Arts Fellow.
