Cathie Pilkington
Cathie Pilkington is an artist whose work engages passionately and critically with the canonical history of figurative sculpture. Crossing the borders of traditional, modern and contemporary idioms, her work often combines intensively made sculptures, drawings, found materials and studio furniture within dense, formerly precise installations.
As a sculptor and assembler her practice is porous, often absorbing and integrating content from archives, collections and historic settings, disrupting any settled understanding of cultural inheritance. By deliberately employing the on-going, cumulative act of making, collecting, storing and re-contextualising materials, her work acts as a forthright acknowledgement of the rich and messy process of living, the struggle to birth the new from old.
Her site responsive installations are balanced ambivalently between chaos and precision and have been described as a kind of art historical fly-tipping.
Jumbled Horses 1-5
A new series of mono-prints on Japanese paper which refer to recent methods of sculptural production using flat, fabric, cutting patterns. Here, the image is encountered as composite, modular, barely holding together. Assembled from an accumulation of mis-matched parts, stuttering into being, suspended within the present process of their own making.
