Caroline Marg Elliott’s work covers printmaking, photography and a combination of both. Focussing on the emotional qualities of landscape in relation to human experiences, she is particularly interested in feelings of nostalgia, reverie, or imagination that landscape may evoke. She is also attracted to the shapes of trees and branches as silhouettes.
Her starting point is photographs she has taken of trees, or the wider landscape. The works she is exhibiting are ink jet transfer prints onto thin hemp paper. Printing with the photographic ink itself, this is absorbed by the paper, so the image adopts a textured, painterly quality. She sometimes makes prints with more than one layer of paper, or collage elements, so that another image can be seen through the hemp paper. This gives her work an imaginary, dream like quality. She introduces a tactility, and made quality, to the print, which, to her, is better able to convey human feelings.
Fundamental to her ethos is an element of chance, and surprise, in the making of the work. Although sometimes produced as an edition, the prints themselves are rarely absolutely identical.
