Alan is interested in the way familiar phrases, social conventions and everyday anxieties can be transformed through visual metaphor. Animals frequently appear as surrogates for human behaviour: comic, vulnerable, threatening or strangely dignified. His images often begin with an idiom or familiar turn of phrase, which is then disrupted and reimagined to create an ambiguous visual narrative.
Working through the slow, materially demanding processes of intaglio printmaking, C. Alan brings historical techniques into dialogue with contemporary image culture.
