Avril Sleeman uses the medium of etching to capture texture and light, predominantly in landscapes.
She works from her own photographs, sketches and paintings to realise images of living creatures as well as landscapes and architectural details. Using mainly hard ground and aquatint she brings out the texture of the subject, and majors on the light that makes an image come alive.
Avril’s submission for this exhibition is a series of works following a 2025 cruise which included Vigur Island (Iceland), Norway’s north western coast and southern Greenland. The fragility of the ecosystems for birds, whales and the awe-inspiring landscape itself is explored. The dangers of human interference, be it to living creatures or millennia old rock formations, hit home to the artist as she hopes it will to the viewers of her works.
Avril has acquired no further formal art qualifications since the A level she obtained 58 years ago. However, she has studied many forms of printmaking, specifically etching, for the majority of those 58 subsequent years.
Avril has exhibited etchings with the Society of Feline Artists for over 15 years and has exhibited with the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair every year since 2019.
