Ant Carver (b.1991) is a London-based figurative painter working from his studio in Hackney Wick. Working across oil painting, charcoal and printmaking, he creates both intimate portraits and large-scale figurative paintings.
Carver's practice explores the relationship between the physical process of painting and the act of storytelling. Often rooted in personal experience, his works combine portraiture with symbolic imagery drawn from his own memories, interests and observations, constructing narratives that exist somewhere between autobiography and fiction.
In this series of prints Carver continues to explore the every day events and situations we find ourselves in. In both soft ground etching and monotype he attempts to catch the differing immediacy of the two mediums. The monotypes are like a snapshot of larger oil paintings and the soft ground etching gives the delicate feeling of a drawing.
Balancing realism with expressive abstraction, Carver layers carefully observed figures with gestural brushwork, sketched marks and textured surfaces.
He has exhibited widely both in solo and group shows, including the 2025 and 2026 Portrait Award show at the National Portrait Gallery and the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts.
