Anna Hutton (b. Edinburgh 1972) lives and works in rural Norfolk. She makes monochrome drawings and prints that move between representation and abstraction and offer a quiet response to nature. Working in series, she repeatedly visits the same views, tracing patterns of transience within the landscape and herself.
Her series Ash, photogravure ghost prints on Awagami Kozo paper, records notable trees within walking distance of her home and studio that have died due to ash dieback disease. The delicacy of the ghost on the almost translucent paper speaks of the poignant pale beauty of the disappearing ash trees and of her wider concern for our increasingly fragile natural world. She was drawn to this medium through a fascination with the 19th century landscape photogravures of Norfolk and Suffolk by PH Emerson.
After a year of BA Painting (Gray’s School of Art Aberdeen 1992), Hutton went on to study MA History of Art (Edinburgh University 1997), and MA Museology (Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts Norwich 1998). Her group exhibitions include: @noplaceart Edition Two Materiality 26, The Handbag Factory London; Sir John Hurt Award 26, Holt Art Projects Norfolk; Visual Arts Scotland Biennial 25, RSA Edinburgh; 40 Dimensions 25, & Gallery Edinburgh; RA Summer Exhibition 24; Derwent Art Prize 24; Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 23.
