Artist Statement
Amy Bryan's printmaking explores portraiture as a means of preserving memory, identity, and cultural history. Working primarily through lithography and relief printmaking, she is interested in the expressive potential of the printed mark and the ways a portrait can honor both an individual life and a broader historical legacy. Her work often reflects an ongoing engagement with African American history and culture.
The works presented at Imprint are selected from a series of portraits of influential Black women writers created using polyester plate lithography. Depicting Phillis Wheatley, Ida B. Wells, and Alice Walker, the prints combine hand-pulled impressions with hand-coloring and coffee staining, creating subtle variations. These material interventions suggest history, memory, and the passage of time while celebrating women whose voices continue to shape American culture.
Bryan received an MFA in Printmaking from Howard University and a BA in Studio Art from Xavier University of Louisiana. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including the International Printmaking Biennial of Douro, Portugal, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans, and numerous solo and group exhibitions. Today, she continues her studio practice in New Orleans.
