Joanna Robson’s artistic practice centres around storytelling and often takes the form of book art created from etchings and laser cut artwork.
Robson’s most recent etchings have their roots in a series of ink images she created during the national lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. They reflect a sense of isolation, loss and of being lost, alongside repeated themes of water, darkness, stars and ships. These prints mark a break from her previous work as they seek to process the shock of the pandemic. ‘Inside the Whale’ references larger themes beyond the pandemic and is inspired by the famous essay of the same name by George Orwell.
Robson graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2007 with a Modern History MA and University College Falmouth in 2010 with an MA in Authorial Illustration.
In 2016 she was awarded a grant by the Hope Scott Trust to complete ‘A Knavish Lad’, a large etched and laser cut artists’ book. Her work is held in collections including the Bodleian Library, the National Library of Scotland, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design Library, Houghton Library at Harvard University and University of the Creative Arts Artists’ Books Collection.
