Simone Riley creates original digital prints using her own ‘reconstructed’ photographic material.
Different and often ‘disparate’ elements taken from a variety of images are merged together and re-arranged to construct new, unusual and slightly surreal narratives.
She particularly likes incorporating photographs of old, worn or decaying surfaces – to create something visually engaging from things that are often overlooked. This also serves to ask the viewer to question what exactly they are seeing.
Through archetypal symbolism and metaphor, Riley’s recent works (‘What’s Your Story?’ and ‘A New Chapter’), focus on themes of transformation and freedom, but with scope for the viewer to find personal meaning and ‘story’, based on their own response to the artwork.
Originally qualified in Graphic Design, Riley has been developing her innovative ‘digital photomontage’ technique over the last 20 years, and exhibiting her original prints as a professional artist for the last 10 years.
Her work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition (2018 and 2022), and the RE: Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers Bankside Gallery, London (2018, 2019 and 2022).
She also exhibits regularly in various galleries and art shows in Sussex and Kent.
