Mary Yacoob creates drawings, prints and videos inspired by diagrams, maps and geometrical structures. By taking scientific, architectural or engineering diagrams and images out of their original context and reinterpreting them as artworks, Mary transforms functional tools into cyphers for the imagination for wider audiences. Her works investigate how the gestural and material possibilities of diagrams and maps can catalyse fruitful chains of associative thought and new dialogues across the arts and sciences.
In recent cyanotypes, developed in dialogue with scientists from the Faculty of Life Sciences at University College London, delicate lines and forms intersect across physical and temporal scales, generating new ways of experiencing the complexity and intricacy of biological systems within the body and the natural environment.
Mary is a PhD candidate at the Slade School of Fine Art, and graduated with an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins and a BA in Fine Art from London Metropolitan University.
Solo exhibitions include Bobinska Brownlee New River, Surgery Gallery, Five Years Gallery and the Hospital Club. Commissions include UCL, Passengers/Camden Council, and BBC/Arts Council England. Artist residencies include OOF Gallery, Flat Time House (with the Diagram Research Group), North Devon Artist Residency, and Mutton Fist Press.
