J. Yuen Ling Chiu uses printmaking to examine our relationships to migration, work, urban landscapes and empire.
In 2025, Chiu was commissioned to produce a body of work for the new Histopathology Laboratory at Cambridge University Hospital. Part of that work included 31 photopolymer gravures of vessels and containers selected by staff.
From much-used glass flasks, to a cutting of a Norfolk Island Pine used as a Christmas tree, the stories were as varied and diverse as the staff and objects themselves. The result was not just as assembly of objects, but a joyful collection of conversations.
Her other body of work is an auto-ethnographic portrait of Hong Kong, a city both familiar and alien, rose-coloured and shit-stained. This bond is unpicked through images of laundry and air conditioning, hidden alleys and tall skyscrapers, at first ubiquitous but doubtless of its 'Hong Kong-ness'.
Chiu graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art with an MFA in 2007. She is a member of the London Group, Thames-side Print Studios, East London Printmakers and Greenwich Printmakers. She has worked as a technician in studios and higher education for more than 20 years, researching sustainable, inclusive pedagogy in making spaces.
