Simon Johnston is an artist whose work explores the nature of language, form and meaning. Printmaking and bookmaking form the core of his practice, whether through series of typographic works or photographic publications.
Six prints from two series of letterpress prints are shown here. The more recent series, Access Denied, employs the language of error messages, and investigates the zone where signal becomes noise. The words were overprinted in two separate passes—a deliberate human error echoing the messages of failure.
In the second series, The Weight of Language, the statements spell out exactly the weight of the type forms used to make the print. They are verifiably true statements. They represent both physical and metaphorical weight. Their subject is the degree of correspondence between form and meaning. They are about gravitas, in every sense of the word.
Johnston graduated from Bath Academy of Art and the Kunstgewerbeschule, Basel, Switzerland. He lives in Bath and runs Verb Editions.
His solo exhibitions include Subject/Verb/Object at University of California, Davis and Definite Articles at The American Cement Building in Los Angeles. He has participated in LA group shows including Mixed Signals (AndLab), Pages (Williamson Gallery) and Quasi: Experimental Writing Systems (HMCT gallery).
