Jialu Yao is a visual artist and printmaker whose practice explores the relationship between people, objects, and space through the language of printmaking.
Working primarily in black-and-white lithography and etching, she creates quiet, stage-like compositions that capture fleeting moments of observation. Growing up in China and later studying in the UK, Yao has developed a sustained interest in how distance—whether cultural, historical, or spatial—shapes the way we perceive and construct meaning.
Her recent work originates from encounters within museums and galleries. Among objects displaced from their original contexts, she reflects on how viewers approach the unfamiliar and how meaning emerges through sustained looking. In these moments, perception becomes reciprocal: we interpret the object through ourselves, and in turn, come to understand ourselves through it.
Yao graduated with an MA in Illustration (Distinction) from Camberwell College of Arts in 2024. Her work has been exhibited at the International Original Print Exhibition 2025, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2025, and the RBSA Print Prize 2026. Her practice was also featured in Printmaking Today (Spring 2026).
