Roma Auskalnyte (1988, Lithuania) is a Helsinki (Finland) based interdisciplinary artist whose practice expands traditional printmaking into embodied, performative and experimental territories. Central to her work is the concept of fleshness - the physicality, vulnerability, texture and memory of the human (her own, artist’s) body. She treats her own skin as a living printing matrix, press and pigment, using movement, pressure and repetition to create hybrid prints, performances, videos, photographs merging them with sculpture elements. The skin becomes a fragile archive that records touch, time, absence and inscription, blurring lines between artist and tool, original and imprint, presence and trace. In many of her works prints are exhibited as raw and uncovered, exposing themselves and allowing viewers to peer deeper in the printed surfaces. The fragility of them correlates with Auskalnytes interest in temporalities and damages we sustain on our skin and body. Along side her artistic practice, Roma is a professional printer (Tamarind PTP 2019). Auskalnyte is an active member of Helsinki Litho studio, specializing in stone lithography, providing printing service for local and international artists.
