Paul Croft’s work is concerned with sense of place expressed through constructed motif. Deriving from an ever-expanding repository of objects, flotsam and jetsam: observed, found, collected, and drawn from landscape, motifs are constructed, assembled on stone using lithographic crayon and tusche, overprinting colour and texture printed from plates. Often combined with symbols and characters from a visual thesaurus collated over many years, these constructed motifs are generally composed with ambiguity and uncertainty of meaning, liberating interpretation, enabling images to evoke memory and sense of place. Increasingly, lithography plates, stones, blocks and stencils have themselves become a part of that repository. Through selective use of stencils, key components from stones and plates are combined and recombined to print unique impressions within variable editions. No two prints are ever exactly the same. For the Stratified Construct Series, each has been printed as a variable edition of ten impressions, some incorporating monotype and rubber stamp. Compositionally, much of the inspiration for these five prints has derived from the structures of walls, graffiti, peeling paint and the corrosive crumbling effects of time. Croft graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1986 and qualified as a Tamarind Master Printer in 1996.
