Mary Gillett moves between the eloquence of her traditional etchings and the immediacy of monotype and monoprint.
Often working on ply, she makes use of the grain, applying carborundum and tile cement to create a physicality that parallels her experience of being immersed in landscape. In her etchings she exploits the movement and unpredictability of sugar-lift, oil and water, and in the monotypes, the flow of ink across a plate. Thus, she continually extends her responses to the wild places of British Columbia, Dartmoor and the Scottish West Coast.
Interweaving such processes with the layers and symbols embedded in these landscapes feels a robust way of thinking through the narratives that confront her that echo a wider world of complex emotion.
Mary’s work is described as conveying powerful, uncompromising landscapes pervaded by a stern lyricism which speaks beyond place and season.
She holds a BA(Hons) from the University of the West of England, a PGCE and a PGDip in Printmaking from Brighton University. A recent award winner at Printfest Ulverston, she shows widely including at the Royal West of England Academy, WCPF (Imprint), and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Her work is held in collections in the UK and internationally.
