Cass Breen’s practice is informed by cultural background and personal history, weaving memory with landscape.
Her prints, drawings and installations flow from a recent winter residency in Newfoundland, observing the rhythms of the wild Atlantic, its bleak cold, furious winds and luminous shifting light, on the shore of this east-facing sea, a leitmotif in her personal history. She also draws on the Blaschka tradition of glass invertebrate models made in the 19 century, their method of construction now lost.
This work from her latest series of prints, Salp, is shown here for the first time bringing together different methods of image creation in printmaking. Drawings are developed using the polymer etching technique. Chine collé is applied, painted with ink and Japanese watercolour on mulberry paper. She works in printmaking, drawing and installation using a wide range of materials which guide her making process and which she considers are intrinsic to the interplay of form and idea.
Based in London she completed an MA with distinction at City & Guilds of London Art School in 2023. She as exhibited widely in group shows since 2015 and her work is held in private collections.
