Neil Woodall etches onto copper plate exclusively using aquatint. Though the work can look very realistic, Woodall does not use photo etching. Woodall concentrates on drawing directly onto the plate, and developing the possibilities of manipulating the aquatint. He focuses on what he perceives is the most important aspect of landscape art, the way sunlight breathes life into a scene.
Woodall studied painting at Hull then completed the Advanced Studies in Printmaking diploma at the Central School of Art in 1985. He was taught there by Norman Ackroyd, and editioned Ackroyd's work for thirty eight years. This has given him a deeper understanding of etching and enabled him to achieve the highest possible standards in printmaking.
Woodall has frequently exhibited his etchings at RA Summer Show. Among his group exhibitions are the Infernal Method at the RA, 2017; and the Printing Sheffield, Millennium Gallery, 2014. He was commissioned to produce the 5m tall plaque for the opening of the Lowry centre in Salford in 2000. Neil Woodall works at Yorkshire ArtSpace, Sheffield.
