Hannah Scoones works primarily with printmaking after being introduced to it during her Art Foundation course. She returned to this practice in 2020 while living in Cornwall, where she undertook a screen printing course and has subsequently learned a range of printmaking techniques, with woodcut being a central focus of her practice.
Woodcut is a slower, more contemplative process, particularly when using oil-based inks which take longer to dry and allow space to create work in an unhurried way. The physical act of carving, combined with the material qualities of the wood itself, plays an important role in the work. The grain and texture of the block often transfer into the final print and are sometimes deliberately emphasized.
Alongside woodcut, Scoones' recent work has expanded to include wood engraving, stone lithography and intaglio printing. Colour is a central concern across her practice, especially in how different layers interact. Scoones is particular interested in depicting light, how it shines through window, the shapes created by shadows, resulting in warm and welcoming artworks.
