Julia Midgley is a printmaker and documentary artist
Julia’s working practice is underpinned by observational drawing.
Using traditional technology Julia uses drawing together with aquatint on zinc plates.
Whilst the plates are a platform for drawn images the artist embraces the unpredictablilty presented by the intaglio process.
Images derive from drawn sketchbook observations. People, artefacts, reportage and current affairs are juxtaposed together in this resource material. As a documentary reportage artist 21st Century current affairs inform the printmaking as do idiosyncratic characters observed in everyday life. .
Julia was Reader in Documentary Drawing at Liverpool School of Art & Design, LJMU, until 2013. She is a past Vice President Manchester Academy Fine Art, is currently Fellow and council member of both the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and The Royal Watercolour Society.
National awards are held for drawings and printmaking. Works have been exhibited widely in the UK and abroad including - RA Summer Exhibition; London Original Print Fair; Mostyn Print Fair; Royal Society of Printmakers exhibitions Bankside Gallery.
Public and private collections include:-
Parliamentary Collections UK; The Wellcome Library; The Science Museum; Gainsborough’s House Museum; and The National Army Museum
