Margaret Ashman (UK, born 1959) is a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Printmakers. She was Chairman of the Printmakers Council for a number of years. Her work has been included in many international exhibitions and is held in public collections including the Ashmolean Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum and museums in Asia, Europe and the USA.
She creates photo etchings from photographs or videos of models signing or dancing. Her practice stems from the notion that signing and gesture have a particular resonance with the viewer because of their origins as the roots of language.
She transforms the starting-point photographs into atmospheric artworks, by placing the dancers in ethereal spaces, sometimes real, sometimes imaginary. The images are etched onto steel or copper plates by the artist in her own studio, and printed on the artist’s Rochat etching press. The prints are original editions. Each one has been printed from one or multiple plates inked and pulled through the press individually by the artist.
Margaret has built up a large body of work over the twenty years since she graduated. She has produced many series of prints, each series exploring a particular idea or theme.
