Ralph Overill’s work investigates feelings of alienation in contemporary society. Employing printmaking alongside performance and photography, he captures fragments of nostalgic dreams, melancholic characters, and desolate spaces, to create cinematic and contemplative scenes.
Recently, Ralph’s practice has sought to interrogate the financial systems and algorithms that appear to govern societal structure, politics, and economies in contemporary life. Inflation, interest rates, and financial markets, forming the bleak horizon of a late-capitalist landscape where we find ourselves trapped, and powerless to intervene. The unaccountable accountant; the calculating cruelness of the wealth pyramid; whenever there is debt, no matter how high the price, it must be paid …with interest.
Ralph was awarded a Professional Doctorate in Fine Art from the University of East London in 2022, having achieved an MA in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Arts in 2011. He has previously been awarded the Clifford Chance Purchase Prize and Curwen Studio Prize for his prints, and exhibited in multiple Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fairs. After relocating from Essex to Scotland, he now works as etching technician at the Glasgow School of Art.
