Nicola Penny works across ceramics and print, drawing inspiration from many areas, including a love of food, art and the written word. Her work is very much influenced by her background in graphic design, often having a fairly minimalist aesthetic. An element of humour and playfulness is an important part of her creative process but she is also equally drawn to exploring ideas around fragility and things that are broken – and the celebration of these imperfections.
This collection of prints is a continuation on from her series of porcelain and parian ceramic jellies. Inspired by the idea that ‘memory is a form of the past that was never present’, they are an exploration of nostalgia, memories and our perceptions of taste and flavour.
It was the desire for more vivid and specific colours, along with the chance to blow up the scale of something that we are familiar with being quite small, that led her to begin working with her own photographs to create as series of limited edition prints, and so bring a new set of artist-inspired jellies to life.
