Edition of 1
Dimensions (WxH): 14 x 10cm

Catherine Mellis (Born UK 1977) Studied Fine Art at The University of Hertfordshire and Southampton Institute. For the last 20 years she has produced screen printed monoprints about the ocean and her particular attachment to it. Catherine as interested in the ocean as it defines herself and becomes a vessel for her past and vehicle for her understanding of the future. Her childhood was one of polarities, a destructive boarding school and her home in an expansive, dessert paradise with her family in Saudi Arabia. This polarity continued to inhabit her adult life beset with many chronic pain conditions that flare and subside, shutting down her life completely only for it to open up again. When she is well she is called to the sea, scuba diving the tropical Oceans. Catherine is in constant conversation with the water, its’ paradoxical closed and yet expansive nature, it as metaphor for a mind in a body, bound by the limits of physics but not of thought. She creates new spaces from old memories, guided by feelings at the time they are created, she tries to reconnect with that part of herself that can be untethered.
