Jeanine Woollard invents characters in the throes of drama, as if they are mid scene. Bodies and portraits are often overstretched or exaggerated in posture, battling with their own physicality; fleeing, ageing, baring weight, tangled in their own materials. Starring raucous hags, a menagerie of stock characters and rough brutes, she blends storytelling with real life; awkward camera-phone portraits, photos of her kids in animal onesies– fleeting moments when fiction emerges in the everyday. Imagery is borrowed from fairy-tales, historical painting, costume catalogues; in equal parts real and make believe. Little biro sketches become complex etchings, collagraphs or monoprint portraits that directly steal the essence of an object. Drawing and printmaking capture sculptural surfaces, allowing stories to emerge through the magic of the ink. Woollard (UK) gained an MFA at Goldsmiths in 2007. She lives, works and teaches in London.
