John Angus been been researching the history of landownership of a west to east geographic slice of north Lancashire, from the sea coast at Cockersand Abbey to the moorland at the Trough of Bowland.
The submitted works are from a series of eight screenprints made with sand, soil, or peat collected across the area.
Each work is in two parts mounted on brown card : A print on paper, in material from the site. A print on paper in gold acrylic giving the geographic location of the collection site, its Land Registry reference number, its description, and the owners of the site.
Rather than creating works which represented the land, Angus wanted to make works which are the land. These soil sprints are themselves tiny plots of (stolen) land, together with their identification.
John Angus is based in Lancaster. Between 1975 and the early 2000s he designed and screen printed posters for arts events around the UK. He was one of a group of artists who started and ran Storey Gallery from 1991 until 2013. Since then he has returned to printmaking. Recent group exhibitions include the Royal Academy Summer Show and John Ruskin Prize, London.
