Lorella Paleni’s practice treats painting as a space outside socially constructed formats, made through intuition rather than rational control.
Her printmaking work emerged from a hunger to preserve the fluidity of painting beyond the stillness of the finished surface. Using the monotype process she captures ephemeral paintings as physical traces of an event. Each transfer mirrors, repeats and mutates the original, so something is always lost and something new emerges. Chance governs the outcome as much as intention.
For Dwellers, Paleni made 618 hand-pressed monotype transfers, painted in watercolour and animated into a 58-second loop. Without outline or contour to separate them, a pack of wolves, a female figure and two wrestling men dissolve into one another. Fighting, dancing, and play metamorphose into one single continuous action. The repetition and ritual of the process make visible what painting alone conceals: the instability and transience beneath the image, a living other emerging from accident.
Paleni holds a BFA from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia and an MFA from Columbia University School of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited internationally across the US, Europe, India and the UK, with recent credits including the Homiens Art Prize (2024).
