Tori McLean is a contemporary artist, printmaker, and maker whose interdisciplinary practice explores how women's value is perceived, assigned, and negotiated within society. Working across printmaking, automata, sculpture, and installation, she investigates the cultural, social, and economic systems that shape ideas of worth, questioning who defines value, how it shifts across contexts, and what, or who, becomes overlooked, marginalised, or undervalued in the process. In this series, her kinetic figures each pose a question Am I Purely Decorative? Do I Merely Multiply? Where Does My Value Lie? Each question is designed to disrupt feminine archetypes whilst also asking the same of printmaking itself. Drawing on traditional craftsmanship and contemporary technologies, McLean combines hand-built mechanisms with analogue and digital printmaking, along with symbolic imagery to create works in which movement becomes both metaphor and critique of the complex forces that shape who we are and what we become, whilst aiming to expose invisible structures of care, labour, beauty, and expectation that continue to shape women's lives.
