Lino-Cut Reduction Edition of 25 Dimensions (WxH): 19.5 x 15.5cm
I am an artist and teacher living in West Sussex. The South Downs and the surrounding landscape fascinates me with its rich history, myths and stories. The countryside abounds with iron age hill forts, ‘haunted’ woods, ancient pathways, crumbling coastline and other sites that have stood witness to the passing of time. I find being immersed in this ever-changing landscape both inspirational and, at times, alluringly eerie. I seek to capture a sense of mood and light within my artwork to help convey the narrative or character of a place.
My approach to my own art has matured and developed over time and I believe it is vital to remain curious and to foster lifelong learning. As I teach art to a range of students, I have had to broaden my range of abilities and learn new skills including printmaking. The process of creating an image by physically carving out layers and turning it into an edition of prints is completely different from my usual practice as a painter. Just as the Sussex landscape has been carved and shaped over time, so the lino reduction also changes to produce an image, but only with careful planning!
