Inspired by landscapes and cityscapes, Laura Gressani uses the constraints inherent in the printmaking process to focus on the essential qualities of her subject.
Laura’s work is rooted in direct observation and she uses sketches made from life as her starting point. The etchings and monoprints created from these, seek to extract the quiet lyricism that she finds in her subject.
Laura returns regularly to depicting the high mountains for the Alps. It is the awe-inspiring presence of the mountains that attracts her, the deep forces and time encapsulated in the contorted layers of rock. In an ongoing series of etchings and monoprints, sometimes combining the two, she aims to capture the drama and subtle colours of these landscapes.
Laura continues to develop her knowledge of printmaking at Edinburgh Printmakers where she is a member. She regularly takes part in curated group exhibitions. Her work was selected for the recent Royal Scottish Academy 200th anniversary exhibition, as well as Visual Arts Scotland curated shows and Edinburgh Printmakers members Show.
Her work is held in the Ruth Borchard Collection and the National Galleries of Scotland Library Collection.
