Richard Magee’s printmaking, experiments with and makes more substantial, incidental parts of his usual practice of painting and bookmaking. Working across different techniques, Magee sees print as a re-energising practice, offering possibilities not found elsewhere. Recurring themes exist. Including, language, time passing, technology, visual rhyming, and updating or recontextualising metaphors and art historical symbols. Uniting all of Magee’s output, is his work’s personality. Characterised as understated though rigorous, it is highly considered, reflective and poetic. Richard Magee (Ireland, born 1994) graduated with an MA in 2023 from the HFBK Hamburg and in 2017 with a BA from the Slade, London. Magee has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a 2021 SIAP Grant from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the 2017 CW Boise Travel Scholarship, a 2017 Cass Painting Award, the 2016 Graham Robertson Travel Scholarship and the 2014 Pankerd-Jones Memorial Prize in Fine Art. Magee has exhibited in both the UK and Europe, with a forthcoming solo show in January 2027 at Hew Hood Gallery in London. Other recent projects include, Just-easia, at Art Arcadia, Derry, 2025 and several artist books. His work is held in many private collections in the United States, UK and Europe.
