I use traditional aquatint, etching, open bite and embossing techniques to study the energy of wild water systems, oceans, seas and waterfalls. My prints are a creative response to places and scenes I have experienced first hand. I always draw directly onto the etching plate and aquatint’s versatility allows me to experiment freely while developing a coherent visual language to express the exhilaration, majesty and omnipotence of wild seas at their most extreme.
I am increasingly concerned about the destructive weather extremes experienced throughout the world and the urgent need for greater human intervention to halt the spiral of global warming. In the Next-the-Oceans series I depict both the compelling beauty and destructive power of the oceans as they meet in the Southern Hemisphere of the Cape coast. In contrast, my most recent series Beside the Seaside, Beside the Sea is based on a Summer storm I witnessed on the East coast of England in 2024. It shows the dichotomy between the compelling beauty of wild seas and their destructive force on land. The title echoes a popular English music hall song from1907 whose lyrics celebrate the joys of being on the coast in the Summer.
