Through carving a wood block or drawing on aluminium from life, Ryan McStay works with print making as an extension of observational drawing and painting. Ryan uses his studio for painting, the preparation of wood blocks, aluminium plates for lithography, and the printing of images from a matrix that were created usually somewhere other than the studio, be it plain-air or a group drawing session.
The images Ryan creates are a smaller scale, reflecting the journeys that his drawings and works take as he chronicles hidden London scenes and places of work, and making. Ryan regularly visits the National Theatre workshops and New Covent Garden Market to draw and observe. These environments are in constant change, and contain objects out of context, which can be interpreted as an out of scale still life or almost surreal settings. Ryan is also exploring the boundary between painting and print making, by making painterly wood cut prints through layering techniques and colour. These images spend more time in the studio, allowing for opportunities to miss-remember and re-interpret the subject.
Ryan's background in drawing and observation stems from his graduate and postgraduate degrees from the London Metropolitan University department of Art and Architecture.
