Léa Marais' practice explores the threshold where observation gives way to imagination.
Working across photography and printmaking, Marais explores how we make sense of what we see. She photographs subjects found in landscapes, museums and urban environments, drawn to objects and forms that feel both familiar and mysterious. Through photogravure, she transforms these photographs into tactile prints that preserve fine detail while creating space for ambiguity. Rather than offering fixed interpretations, her work invites viewers to explore both the shared meanings we attach to images and the landscapes of their own imagination.
The works presented at Imprint are part of an ongoing investigation into how photographic images can become physical objects. Marais is currently expanding this research by using her photogravure plates as matrices for casting, exploring how images can move between photography, print and sculpture.
Marais has developed her printmaking practice through independent study and specialist training at East London Printmakers and LUX Darkroom, with a particular focus on photopolymer etching.
She has exhibited in juried exhibitions and print fairs in the UK and internationally, including the Festival of Print (London), the Derby Print Open, and the LA Printmaking Society Exhibition.
